Walk for KHAIR 2015 Review !

On Saturday, June 20th, 55 registered walkers took time out of their busy schedules to help support the KHAIR program at the second annual Walk for KHAIR, sponsored by Community Health Network of CT, Inc. The 5-mile journey took place at the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail in Wallingford, Connecticut. KHAIR is a program aimed to increase self-esteem in at-risk youth by pairing them with hairstylists and barbers who provide complimentary hair services. In addition, participants attend life-skills workshops to help bolster their self-confidence.
Registration opened at 8:00 a.m. and continued into a 9:00 a.m. kick-off. Twelve teams raised over $4,500 to help support the KHAIR program. Donations came from as far as Tampa, Florida; Allentown, Pennsylvania; and right here in Connecticut. Early morning joggers, walkers, and cyclists who were using the trail for their morning exercise rituals also made donations. Walkers were encouraged to participate in a raffle contest for a chance to win some amazing prizes. The monies collected all went to the KHAIR program.

It was a beautiful, sunny day; the perfect weather for teams to come out and support this worthy cause. Some made it a family affair and had their children walk alongside of them. Other children rode their bikes and scooters, while still others rode comfortably in their baby carriages. Some walkers, like the Peterson family, brought their canine friends. One impressive young lady named Elizabeth Parson ran the 5-mile trail. She inspired and motivated us all to keep walking and meet the 5-mile challenge!

We want to thank everyone who walked and donated their time and resources. We also want to thank all of our volunteers who helped put this walk-a-thon together. We could not have done it without their support! We would also like to recognize our very own Nargis Karampurwala, a member of our Cooking Matters CT Team. Her dedication and support to the KHAIR program is greatly appreciated.

winnersAnd the WINNERS ARE…..

The team that raised the most money was the “Walking on Sunshine” team, comprised of CHNCT’s own ICM Department. They raised $1,100 and have won a pizza party, sponsored by our friends at Primo Pizza and Oakdale Pizza in Wallingford.

Thank you all for KHAIRing! See you NEXT YEAR!
